A type of chess proposed in 1927 by José Raúl Capablanca (world champion in 1921–1927). He believed that the level of chess knowledge reaches such a high level that the games will soon always end in a draw. This danger of a "tie death" was the main reason he developed a more complex and richer chess game.

To achieve this, he introduced (apart from the classic set of chess pieces) two new pieces, the archbishop and the chancellor:

Archbishop - figure in fields c1 and c8, moving like a Bishop and a Knight,

Chancellor - a figure in spaces h1 and h8, moving like a Rook and a Knight.

Capablanca believed that adding two strong pieces would reduce the probability of a draw and make the game more interesting, as the new pieces had properties that enrich the game.
